I recently did a factory reset of my PC. I reinstalled Firefox, logged back into my Firefox account but my passwords didn't carry over and I can't save new ones. I get the option to save them every time but when I click save password it doesn't actually do anything. I checked my settings and I have everything checked off so that it it should save them, and I don't have any exceptions or a primary password but it just doesn't work. Why dis?

Hi

Thank you for your question about the Firefox Sync service.

It appears from your question, that you are using Firefox Sync as a back up service. This is not what Sync is designed to do. The Firefox Sync service takes a copy of the data you wish to include and transfers it to a second device (typically a mobile device such as a tablet or a telephone) running a copy of Firefox. The storage in between all attached devices is both temporary and fragile and is not stable enough to be (and is not designed as) a reliable backup service.

If you have a copy of your Firefox profile for desktop Firefox, you may be able to recover your bookmarks and other data. Please have a read of this article.

If you have a copy of your data on a mobile version of Firefox, please follow these instructions to connect it to Firefox Sync to copy your data.

If this is standard install by default Firefox doesn't have the AutoFill/AutoSave on the user has to go to their settings and turn these two options on to save logins/passwords.

I just tried that now and yeah it failed also. It comes up with red banner error message just saying an error occurred trying to save the password. Also for some reason there is message at the top of the screen asking me to enter my primary password to view saved logins even though i don't have a primary password. Should I make a primary password is that why its getting confused?

Try to rename/remove logins.json (encrypted logins) and key4.db (encryption key) as it is possible that there is a problem with the files that store the logins.

You can use the button on the "Help -> More Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page (Root directory).

I deleted those files, as I think that's what you meant, but that didn't do anything

If anyone ever has the same problem I was able to fix it by deleting my Firefox account, uninstalling Firefox and deleting the Mozilla folder in my AppData (you can find this by searching "run" in the Microsoft search bar then typing %appdata% into the run window). I don't know if all those steps were necessary as I'm not sure if passwords save to the account or the device, but that combination fixed the problem.
