On restoring a previous session, firefox ejects some tabs into new windows (about 1/2 of them), instead of keeping tabs together

After an update a few weeks ago, every time I restore a previous session (new or old) some of the tabs eject to a new window when I click on it instead of staying within the same tab structure.

Not sure if this is related, but most of these pages have either passwords, https, or both if that helps.

Does this only happen after you click the tab and do the tabs initially open in the same window?

All of the tabs open initially. The problem occurs when these pages are password protected with basic authentication, which requires a password or hitting cancel. These tabs tear off in different ways. Sometimes just clicking on the tab does it. Other times by clicking 'cancel' in the password window. Some tabs just jump of the page when I'm trying to type in a password on one of the tabs. In any case you have to do something by bring the tab in the forefront. I'll try to see if it's related to the previous mentioned bug. I've been using FF in this fashion for a couple of years now and I've never seen this problem until recent.

It could be related; however that bug is now "closed" so it has to be another one. I tested it again. The tabs tear away if you sloooowly mouse off of the tab if the window is requesting a password or if you hit cancel and slowly mouse up to the tab (not all the time though). It appears that it's related to the mouse over or mouse off functions. Super annoying and has only appeared in the last few weeks. Either create a new bug report or open up the last one. It's certainly not fixed if it's the previous bug. How to reproduce: Open up 8-12 pages that require basic authentication. Close down the browser and open up the session.

Try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

Turning off hardware acceleration didn't fix it.
