I don't use tabs, and followed directions to move them to the bottom of the page, but it didn't happen, and the bookmarks toolbar is now mostly absent.

Using the "view" menu, I will check the bookmarks toolbar, and it will appear, only to disappear with the next page change. In addition to moving, or hiding the tabs feature, there's a new add-on toolbar that I would like to eliminate. This add-on toolbar is not checked in my "view" menu, but it appears anyway.

Solution choisie

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window or otherwise make changes.

I assume that you were referring to setting browser.tabs.onTop pref to false on the about:config page.

Current Firefox versions only show the "Tabs on Top" menu entry in the "View > Toolbars" and "Firefox > Options" menu and in toolbar context menus if the tabs aren't in the default position on top.

It sounds as though your toolbar customization file might be corrupted. You can rename the file and customize from scratch.

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using

Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Show in Finder" button

Switch back to Firefox and Exit

Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename localstore.rdf to something like localstore.old

Restart Firefox. Hopefully now toolbars will turn on and off at your command and not just do whatever they want.

If you need tips on re-customizing, see: Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars.

Does that help?
