I'm using a Macintosh 10.6 (Snow Leopard) with Firefox 23.0.1. It's incredibly frustrating to have Bing as my home page since I prefer Google or my own website. I've tried changing the preferences and I put in my preferred home page address under General, but even though it still has that listed as my home page, I always get Bing when I open a new tab. How do I lose Bing so new tabs bring up my own website? Thanks.

Check for a user.js file, if its there, delete it. PLEASE see the link in the bullet below on how to find and delete the user.js file.

Thanks for your response but when I open the profile, there is no file that says user.js -- only prefs.js or sessionstore.js.

Does using the searchreset addon help?

If I reset all of the preferences with SearchReset, then won't it just reset the defaults to what Firefox already has... Bing as the homepage? After all, that's the default! Plus, it's going to reset all of my personal preferences, logins, etc., correct?

Why would your team force everyone to use Bing?! This is taking so much of my time and energy, I may just switch to Safari.

I guess you can't read the description of the addon, the defualt's are google.

But lemme post it here, so you can read it.

About this Add-on

The complete set of action performed by this add-on on installation are: - reset "browser.startup.homepage" pref to its default value - reset "keyword.URL" pref to its default value - reset "browser.search.defaultenginename" pref to its default value - new in version 0.2: resets browser.newtab.url to its default value - restores the build's default search engine if it was removed - moves the build's default search engine into first position and selects it

Note that it's possible for a given pref's "default value" to be modified by an add-on. To be sure that you're getting Firefox's original defaults, you should also carefully audit your installed add-ons.

The code is available at https://github.com/gavinsharp/SearchReset . There is no easy way to undo the changes, but the old pref values are saved and can be viewed using about:config (search for "searchreset.backup.").

I have just clicked to add SearchReset two times down but it doesn't show up in the Add-On list. How am I supposed to access it?

Firefox uses an "internal page" - about:home as the default homepage, not a web page like Bing.com .

SearchReset 0.3 No Restart
by Gavin Sharp

This add-on is very simple: on installation, it backs up and then resets your search preferences and home page to their default values, and then uninstalls itself. This affects the search bar, URL bar searches, and the home page.
- new in version 0.2: resets browser.newtab.url to its default value
- restores the build's default search engine if it was removed
- moves the build's default search engine into first position and selects it

You didn't provide your system details as requested, maybe you have an extension installed that set Bing as your homepage and continues to reset it as such?

The very first line in this thread is: I'm using a Macintosh 10.6 (Snow Leopard) with Firefox 23.0.1.

The only extension that I have is Converter Community Toolbar.
