Adult site www.bdsmstreak.com

open it and within a second or two 20+ identical tabs are opening.

McAfee site advisor can't stop it. It comes up with a result

tried firefox/option/general/home page %7c Ok .. ...... That doesn't stop it

tried firefox/tools/tabs/options/open new windows/ok That doesn't stop it

Done a complete virus/malware scan ... nothing

Any suggestions?

Are you visiting that site intentionally, or is that site opening one of the problems?

Is Firefox's pop-up blocker enabled (to block unrequested new windows/tabs)?

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Content

Note that there are a range of exceptions to what is considered an unrequested popup. If you want to limit when sites can open a popup, you can edit a hidden setting. I have not experimented with this myself, so I'm not sure whether it will work on that site.

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste popup and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the dom.popup_allowed_events preference and edit out the events that should not be allowed to trigger a popup:

default list:

  • change - typically used when you edit something in a form
  • click
  • dblclick
  • mouseup - when releasing the mouse button, just before a click or drag is registered
  • reset - used on forms to clear all the fields
  • submit - when you submit a form
  • touchend - not sure, perhaps when you lift your finger after tapping or swiping

If you decide to clear them all, don't worry, you can always restore the original list by right-clicking dom.popup_allowed_events and choosing Reset.

Occasionally you will get a download dialog with Open/Save/Cancel for something that seems as though it should open in Firefox. If you choose Firefox in that situation, it sometimes creates an infinite loop of new tabs opening.

Since it might be impossible to determine exactly what content in the site is triggering the loop, it often is simplest just to rename the file that stores your download action preferences and go back to the default preferences. Here's how:

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using

Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Show Folder" button

Leaving that window open, switch back to Firefox and Exit

Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename mimeTypes.rdf to something like mimeTypes.old

Restart Firefox.

If that page asks you how you want to open something, next time, don't choose to open it with Firefox.
