To remove VLC, type about:plugins in your adress bar, scroll down till you see the VLC plugin and remove the dll file pointed to by 'Path:'.

It may also help to disable hardware acceleration, as pointed out by multiple users.

To disable hardware acceleration follow the instructions from the following post Disable Hardware Acceleration.

I've noticed Firefox launching slower than Google Chrome as well.

It's good to hear that Firefox is faster in safe-mode. Safe-mode is faster because it disables a lot of different add-ons, plugins and other things.

Maybe have a look at the plugins as well under the plug-ins section and consider disabling these you don't often use.

You don't have to fully remove the plug-ins, but you can also disable them teporarily. In the dropdown menu.

To fully remove a plug-in you might uninstall the software that comes with it. To do this have a look at this article: Remove Plug-ins.

I don't expect Firefox to become as fast as Chrome, but by following the steps above, I think Firefox might speed-up considerably.

There are a lot of reasons that can cause Firefox to start slower than other browsers. It's true that plug-ins, themes and extensions can be part of the problem since it takes considerable time to load them. A similar question has been asked a while ago Firefox slow on startup. As you can see mentioned in the answers, try to boot into safe mode (by repeatingly pressing F8) and select Windows Safe Mode with networking support. Check if this causes Firefox to launch faster. If it does, you may consider disabling a few of the different extensions when you don't need them. I've also seen the avast!Online Security extension causing considerable slow down while browsing because it uses functions that are part of google crhome.

Hopefully this has answered your question.

When I started FF in safe mode, it starts quickly, so I disabled most of the add-ons and start in normal mode, again it takes so longer.
