I had to completely restore my computer system (Windows 8.1) including reinstalling Thunderbird (now version 31.1.2). Before restoring I backed up the profile folder, named nxppmfyc.default on a memory stick, following the Mozilla instructions. The name of the 'new' profile folder created through the new installation of Thunderbird is mmnhpr85.default. Following Mozilla's instructions I copied the contents of the backup folder and pasted it into the 'new' folder. Certain data like the address book were obviously copied and are now available. However the extensive, highly structured local folders are completely missing.

Had you changed the Local Directory entry under the Local Folder account settings to somewhere outside your profile? The resulting disconnection of a mail store from the main profile is the one main reason for not changing those entries.

Hello Zenos. Thanks a lot for your comment. I'm not very 'computer savvy' and at first I didn't really understand it but when I went to the Local Folder account settings I realized that the folder name displayed there is quite different from my profile folder (it has the structure of a profile folder element name '...default.Mail'). Would I have to take the folder name of the 'Mail' folder in the profile folder and paste it as folder name for the Local Folder? But I'm not aware that I did any action at any time in the Local Folder account settings. How could such a strange folder name creep in???
