Sort by unread first, but also threads containing unread messages

When I sort my messages, I use :

* threaded view
* sort by date (most on top)
* then I click sort by read/unread (unread on top)

In that way, I have all the unread messages on top, and then all the unread, and inside each of these two "halves", I have the most recent on top. My problem is : when I have a thread that has some unread messages but (at least) the first one read, it is sorted under the sorting conditions of the first message, so it is in the "read half". How could I get this thread in the "unread half"?

I first thought I was looking for an option like "sort threads by last message" instead of first message. But after reading the whole bug here : https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=254159 I finally found out the problem. When I sort by Unread, the whole thread is considered read because the first message is. Why?

Maybe the problem boils down to this : https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=617855 Not sure though, 'cause it has no comment nor antyhing added and it's 5 years old, I can't believe I'm the only one to think like that, so I may be missing where else this behaviour is reported. Can anyone tell?

(Oh, also, totally unrelated but I created my account for this question and the confirmation email titled "Please confirm your Firefox Help question", so I thought "damn, I made sure to post it on Thunderbird part!", wich I actually did, just the Subject confusing. Not sure where to report that…)

for part two try posting over here https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/forums/contributors

I think the bug you need to follow and vote for is https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=479969

If Wayne agrees, we will close 617855 as worksforme
