TBird with IMAP gmail -- not letting me move messages out of inbox

I have used TBird for many years (in POP configuration with a comcast account) and stored a large amount of emails on my local hard drive. Recently I changed to using TBird with gmail as IMAP. I followed all the instructions for how to transition an existing account from POP to IMAP. Generally the transition went well and for a few weeks they seemed to be working fine.

Part of that transition, that I can't tell whether could be part of my current troubles or not, is that I now use an android smartphone to check the gmail account, using the gmail app, in addition to TBird from my PC.

So here is my trouble: now I am finding that when in TBird on my PC if I try to move a message out of my inbox and in to my 'local folders' for storage-- or in some cases I just try to delete a message-- Thunderbird does not register any change. The message appears to just remain in the inbox.

When trying to move a message, I can try to drag-drop it to the destination folder, or I can right-click it and navigate the "Move To" menu, but either way nothing happens.

TBird still seems to be able to receive/download messages but once they are in my inbox I can't seem to get them out.

Any ideas?
