Thunderbird has started randomly moving subfolders and then will not allow me to place the moved folders back in the correct location.

Thunderbird has worked very well as my email program until recently. The emails come in correctly to my inbox. I then store the emails which I wish to keep in various folders for future rereading. I have many subfolders to handle this process, but that has not been a problem until recently. Now I find that Thunderbird randomly moves some, but not all, of the (sub)folders [not the stored emails themselves but the whole (sub)folder] to a different folder from where I originally placed them. This results in my having to search through many folders before locating the (sub)folder I am looking for. It may be deep within a folder which Thunderbird seems to have selected. When I attempt to move the misplaced folder to the correction position, Thunderbird refuses to recognize the action. Is this a memory issue or is there something else going on?

I have tried downloading a new version of the program to no effect.

The last time someone posted here about folders moving they were moving them with a mouse that was defective. Have you tried using a new mouse, or renewing the battery.

Thanks, Matt. I changed my mouse to a brand new one but the problem remains the same. The message that I get when I attempt to relocate the misplaced folder is that my server does not recognize the folder and thus cannot perform any function.

Hmm sounds like a serve update then... I must assume that you are using an IMAP account for the folder locations to be relevant to the server. Which IMAP mail server thre are no hard and fast rules about where folders can be. Some require them to all be hanging off the inbox. Others refuse that location out of hand. Some allow nested folder and others also do not.

So what mail provider are you using?
