win 10 erased abook.mab

A few weeks ago, Windows 10 did a major update on my home PC (Windows 10 Pro, retail version, single PC user).

Next thing I observe is that my history.mab directory is missing and my abook.mab only contains about 30 addresses of recent email correspondence. After doing a file search of the entire C: directory I found no original copy, just a copy of an older version dated August 2016 in a back up directory that I created when Win 10 was newly installed after ending my use of Vista.

Is there any way I can retrieve them? Perhaps moot at this point.

Next I copied my old abook.mab and history.mab from D: directory of last August but now I observe that the addresses which were collected (about 30) no longer appear in either the new or history file. Do I have to copy each missing one individually?

Not happy with Windows major 10 update!!!

First, is Windows set to show hidden files and folders? See: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/14201/windows-show-hidden-files

That may or may not improve your search results.

Did Windows ask what you wanted to do with your data when it did this update? In those cases, you often can find a temporary folder named

C:\Windows.old

on the system and inside a Users folder that contains your previous data. If you did an in-place update and all your other data survived, that probably does not exist.

I don't like the System Restore feature, but when Windows updates, it usually create a snapshot of the files in your AppData\Roaming folder and you can use a third party program to explore old restore points for files in those snapshots:

I'm not the best person to describe how to use those old files, but to avoid breaking things, please copy the old files you find out to a neutral location such as the Documents folder rather than trying to restore them directly.
