After importing FF bookmarks from HTML, many blank lines appear in Bookmarks dropdown, much like a blank piece of line paper.

I have a master image of my client systems running Win7. I have FF 52.3 ESR on my client systems. I made updates to my FF bookmarks and exported my updated bookmarks to HTML. I then imported that HTML file into another client system and it duplicated my entire bookmark tree structure. I then deleted every bookmark and folder that could be deleted. Bookmarks Toolbar, Bookmarks Menu, All Bookmarks, and Other bookmarks could not be deleted. I then imported the same HTML file and when I pulled down my bookmarks menu I had numerous blank lines resembling blank line paper. What did I do and how can I correct this?

Thank you

Does this also show in the bookmarks sidebar (Ctrl+B)?

Note that importing an HTML backup always merges the imported bookmarks with existing bookmarks, so you first need to remove all bookmarks. You can't remove All Bookmarks and the three root folders (Bookmarks Toolbar, Bookmarks Menu, Other Bookmarks).

Sounds you get a lot of separators. Do you see these separators in the Bookmarks Manager (Library)?

Did you check the HTML backup for unusual code?

more options

Thank you cor-el. Yes I understand that the backup merged the imported with existing bookmarks. Therefore I then deleted all existing bookmarks except for those that could not be deleted as you pointed out also.

I do have a lot of separators but when I right click in the space I don't have an option to delete a separator. There are no separators in the Bookmarks Manager.

I did not get a chance to examine the HTML but that will be the first thing I do in the morning.

Thank you for your response and welcome all possible resolutions.

No this does not show in the bookmarks side bar. Only in the pull down menu. I did examine the html and removed suspect code however that still didn't fix the problem. I then deleted all entries that could be deleted save for default folders. After restarting FF the dropdown menu then showed only the defaults and Other Bookmarks at the end with the same blank line paper effect. Is there a default Bookmarks .cfg that I can check or can I somehow import a completely blank html?

Thanks for all your help thus far.

What tags do you have in the HTML file?

Normal separators show as <HR> tags in a bookmarks.html file.

more options

Just heading and list tags. I removed all the hr tags also. Tomorrow I plan on exporting the bookmarks with everything removed and see what the html looks like then. I have to believe there is a default config somewhere that I can look at and examine.
