Since the auto update to FF 58.0, Gmail will no longer open, and other random websites won't open or they hang. I'm on Win 10 and use AVG (no changes in that). Clearing cookies and cache have no effect. I've uninstalled/reinstalled FF 3 times now, and each time that fixes the problem for a few hours then it promptly recurs. I have no issues opening Gmail or other sites in Edge. My long-standing extensions are ABP, LastPass, and XMarks, and disabling these doesn't help.

Firefox updated itself to 58.0.1, and now it's working again properly again.

Gmail and other opens just fine for me. I can open in IE11, Edge, Chrome and close and relogin without issues on FF58, IE11, Edge, Chrome. So I think there something wrong with your FF and how it install. You should go back and check how it was installed.

I concur that there's something wrong with FF, because Gmail and other websites all work fine on Edge. As previously mentioned, I've uninstalled and reinstalled FF 3 times, using downloads from FF. I didn't have this problem before the auto update from FF several days ago.

Please explain the problem in detail. What happens? Error messages?

Did you do a clean reinstall and made sure to remove the Firefox program folder?

  • (64-bit Firefox) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
  • (32-bit Firefox) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support to see if that has effect in case security software is causing problems.

Also check for malware.

No error messages. Gmail and other websites just won't open. Other websites will open, then just freeze.

On the third reinstall, I did remove the folder itself and it didn't make any difference. I haven't booted in Safe Mode but I have turned AVG off (and made sure Defender stayed off) and that didn't help. Besides the daily virus scans, I've rescanned for malware several times and haven't detected anything. I've also run speed tests in Edge and there's nothing wrong with my internet connection.

Last night, without any intervention by me, FF spontaneously started working again. We'll see how long it lasts this time. I don't know what's causing this but it clearly started with the 58.0 update.

Too many A/V can also cause your problem you either choose Defender or AVG not both.

more options

As I said earlier, I use AVG. When I turned it off to see if that affected the FF problem, I made sure that Windows didn't automatically turn on Defender instead. Turning off AVG did not help.

more options

Turned off doesn't mean it still in effect. Like I said too many A/V program running will cause unforeseen problems.
