User-defined folders vs default folders
System: Linux Mint 18.3, Thunderbird 52.7.0 (behaviour also observed on other setups)
Set-up: eMail account from German email provider (GMX). The provider offers up to five email address for the same mailbox, with one of them marked as primary address (primary@gmx.de) and the other one called aliases (alias1@gmx.de, alias2@gmx.de, ...). The IMAP folder structure is named in German; therefore the sent folder is named "Gesendet" on the server. However, in folder settings I have selected that all sent mail shall be put in the folder "Gesendet".
Problem: All email sent from main address primary@gmx.de is put to directory "Gesendet". All email sent from alias addresses is put to the directory "Sent", which is freshly created for this purpose. The behaviour is 100% reproducible.
Question: Is this a bug or a feature. From my setting, I would expect all mail (independent of used alias) to be stored in the directory "Gesendet" without the directory "Sent" (Thunderbird default folder name?) to be created. Am I missing a setting?

Thanks for the info. I can see that you have created one mail account which has 6 identities. One will be the default and this will be seen as the mail account name in Folder Pane and in Account Settings. This is the one which is currently behaving as expected.
Check all others by doing the following.
- Right click on mail account in Folder Pane and select 'Settings'
- Click on 'Manage Identities' button
A small window opens and it will list all the various email addresses / identities. The following instructions need to be completed for each additional identity (not the top default one).
- Select the eg: second, identity in the list and click on 'Edit'
Another window opens...'configure the settings for this identity'
- click on 'Copies & Folders' tab
- select 'Place a copy in'
- select 'Other'
- select the default mail account name and 'Gesendet' folder
- click on 'OK'
Repeat the above actions on all the additional identities in the list.
- Finally click on 'OK' to save and close Account Settings.
Exit Thunderbird allow a little time for background processes to complete. Start Thunderbird

Note: IMAP mail accounts see a remote view of server by subscribing to see server folders. All emails are stored on server. All imap folders synchronise with server folders. They are basically one and the same. So if you are sending from identity B, but want email stored in identity A sent folder. This is being put onto the server in identity A's sent folder. So the server for identity A email address must be allowed to receive and store identity B email address's sent emails. If this is an issue please read info below which may offer a better solution.
There is another solution which you could consider. Instead of using different identities for one mail account......... Create a separate mail account for each email address. So they act individually. This means each email address would be listed in the Folder Pane. Each would have their own set of folders. Then, in Thunderbird, you could use the 'Unified' view.
- 'Menu icon' > 'Folders' > 'Unified'
This would create one unified 'sent' folder. This would be a virtual folder showing everything sent from all mail accounts. You can also expand that folder to see individual 'Sent' folders. Image below shows an example of 'Unified' view in Folder Pane; I've expanded all folders to show the individual accounts within each Unified eg: 'Sent' folder.
Problem solved. Many thanks for the professional support.
