My archived sent messages are in the archives inbox folder, rather than a subfolder named Sent. How can I fix that?

I was showing a friend how to archive emails. When I archive the inbox files go into yearly folders. Each yearly folder has a subfolder named "Sent" with the sent messages.

My friend's messages archived into yearly folders like I'm used to seeing, but when we archived the sent messages, they didn't go into "sent" folders. They are now mixed into the yearly folders. How do I separate them?

your only choice is a manual sort.

I would suggest changing the headings in the mail list to show from instead of correspondents, then clicking on the heading will sort all the messages by the from which should make finding the ones he sent much easier that going one at a time.

Note Account settings > copies and folders. Click the archive options button. Your install will have keep existing folder structure selected. your friends will not.
