I changed my email a couple of months ago, and set my new email address as the default. I deleted the old email address settings. I have a second email address set up for my wife; again this changed at the same time as mine, and I also deleted the old email settings. Since the change, new mail coming into our inboxes is only occasionally marked as unread, mostly it is marked as read. We normally have the viewing pane toggled off. How can I get things working the way they used to, where emails only get marked as read when I open them or use F8 for the viewing pane?

re: I deleted the old email address settings. just to be clear on what you did.... Do you mean you deleted the mail account from Thunderbird? OR Do you mean you modified the settings of the original mail account?

Did you keep the original email address, but it now has differnt server settings? Did you create a new mail account for the new email?

re: new email - What type of mail account are you talking about POP or IMAP? If Imap, do you view any of those emails via another computer or via webmail using a browser or via a phone? If yes, they would have been set as read on the server when you opened them. Imap accounts folders are synchronised to show same as server.

Do you have the following settings in Options? 'Menu icon' > 'Options' > 'Options' > 'Display' > 'Advanced' tab Select 'Automatically on display' Select 'Immediately on display' This will mark as read any new unread email you open to read. click on OK

I deleted the old email account completely from Thunderbird. The old email account no longer exists. The new email is IMAP, and I can also view it using Gmail on my phone. However, new emails are coming in to my Thunderbird Inbox marked as read even before I open Gmail on my phone, let alone look at individual emails there. In Gmail, in my Inbox they are marked as unread until I open them, even after I view them in Thunderbird. I'm using Thunderbird 52.9.1 (32-bit) if that's any help.
