Thunderbird no longer can access AOL to synch emails
On Oct. 18 I made some changes to my AOL/Verizon account: I canceled a fancy protection package because it was redundant with other stuff; and I activated, then an hour later deactivated, two-step verification. The email from AOL acknowledging that deactivation was the last one received by Thunderbird.
Now, Thunderbird asks for a password, but the password for AOL, which works fine directly at aol.com, does not work from Thunderbird. The error message I eventually get, after the green progress bar has shown full for several minutes, is "Sending password for user {my username} did not succeed. Mail server pop.verizon.net responded [SYS/TEMP] server error --Please try again later". AOL support tried, but was unable to rectify the situation, said their system is just fine, sent me back to Thunderbird. Can you help?

AOL Verizon is all done through Yahoo servers. It is likely you have not setup the necessary things via webmail and so therefore they are blocking the connection.
They require you to select the option to use 'less secure apps' done via webmail account.
They also prefer you to enable 'two step verification' and then use an 'application specific password' which you use in Thunderbird instead of your normal password.
