I usually have the setting to ask where to save them, but I altered settings to test results and noticed the same as you. If a single attachment I was asked to click on 'Save' If multiple attachments, I was being asked to select a folder on the desktop although I could select 'Desktop' from the top directory. Then clicked on 'Select Folder' to save to desktop.

Either way, the save should be automatic and not require additional input from user.

I checked the 'Config editor' and it correctly says:

  • messenger.save.dir; C:\Users\User Account name\Desktop

I have created a bug report, it would be helpful if you could also make a comment stating what Operating System you are using, version of Thunderbird etc.
