New draft copy created on each save (POP3) [repost]
Hello! I'm writing this post because my previous post after a long time is still unsolved: please see at https://support.mozilla.org/it/questions/1246436.
As described:
- Each time I save/close a draft message, a new updated copy of the message is created in the local Draft folder, but the old one isn't deleted.
- AutoSave do the same
Steps done:
- removed all IMAP accounts.
- verified that draft settings point correctly into "Other" Global Account Draft folder.
- restarted TB in safe mode and tested again.
- repaired the Draft folder with right click > repair
- tried to rebuild Draft folder.
Regarding last step done, I tried to rebuild Draft folder from the Local Folders. This didn't work because if I:
- first close TB,
- remove Draft and Draft.MSF files and
- restart TB,
TB itself does NOT recreate the Draft folder as expected; and each time I save a draft I receive an error asking to use a new local-draft folder because Draft folder is having an issue.
Please also note I already read this KB/thread:
- https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1168853
- https://support.mozilla.org/it/questions/1282944#answer-1300895
without any success. :(
Regarding the last question (#1282944) I didn't find any Drafts and Drafts.msf files into 'Mail' folder - 'pop mail account name folder'.
Thank you so much helping me to solve this very annoying problem I'm experiencing since years! ilNebbioso

The fourth image showing 'Account Settings' says you have not selected a drafts folder.
Under 'Drafts and Templates' It shows 'Other' is selected - which is correct, but it also says 'Choose folder'.
You need to click on 'Choose Folder' and select: 'Bozze on Local Folders' Then check the same for other pop mail accounts.
click on OK
Restart Thunderbird to ensure all is saved correctly.

Hi,
I am having the same issue, but for IMAP. I tried as specified above with deleting Drafts and Drafts.msf in both the Local folder and the individual IMAP folders but the problem still persists.
I need my drafts to not just be local as I access them on different devices.
Any further suggestions?
This problem has only been happening in the last month or so (give or take a bit due to the warped sense of time in my head due to the pandemic). It had been working as expected before that. I did not change anything in the config around then but there might have been a Thunderbird update in there, I don't really remember.
It is making me crazy because since the copies remain I keep thinking I haven't actually sent the message as usually the draft gets deleted automatically once you send it.

Only POP accounts that are set up as deferred accounts to use a Global Inbox in Local Folders mail account will use the 'Local Folders' Draft folder. You do not have a POP account.
With Imap accounts they keep copies on the server so you can access them from different devices using an imap connection. So the draft copies should be being saved in the imap account Drafts folder. This sychronises with server to update the Drafts folder on server, so all imap connections can see the draft. IMAP accounts do not use the 'Local Folders' mail account for drafts because 'Local Folders' mail account folders do not synchronise with any server.
- In 'Account Settings' > 'Copies & Folders' for the imap account
- Select: 'Drafts folder on imap mail account name'
But there are occasions when for some unknown reason, imap accounts can work better if you select: 'Other' and choose 'Drafts on imap account name'.
Do you keep full downloaded copies of drafts in your imap Drafts folder, so you can read them even in offline mode? Check the settings:
- Select 'Synchronisation & Storage'
- Click on 'Advanced..' button
Is 'Drafts' checkbox selected or not ? If not selected:
- Select the checkbox for 'Drafts'
- click on OK.
Click on 'OK' to save and close Account Settings.
Q: How frequently do you compact the Drafts folder? Old marked as deleted and hidden emails could still be lurking in the file. If not regulary maintained you might experience corruption in the file.
- Right click on imap 'Drafts' folder in Folder Pane and select 'compact' to remove any old marked as deleted emails.
Exit Thunderbird. Wait a few moments to ensure background files are updated. Start Thunderbird.
I have the same problem in that everytime I save a draft a new copy is created. I have checked that all accounts have the Copies & Folders, Drafts and Templates set to Other Drafts on Local Folders. I have deleted the drafts and drafts.msf as someone else suggested.
I had to upgrade from an earlier version and previously it worked fine. Now with 78.4.3 (32-bit) I have this problem
All help would be appreciated
re : I have deleted the drafts and drafts.msf as someone else suggested. Why are you using 'Local Folders' mail account? Is this because you have POP accounts that are all set up as deferred accounts - Global Inbox ? If yes, then exit Thunder bird, access profile name folders and delete the 'Draft' mbox file and also the 'Draft.msf' file from both the Pop account and Local Folders mail account. then restart Thunderbird.
I am using Pop and I have deleted all drafts and drafts.msf. I then restart and when writing a new email it creates a new local folders\drafts and drafts.msf. However everytime I save the draft email a new entry is created in drafts. I obviously dont understand it. How should I configure the Accounts settings, Copies & Folders. Should this be "Drafts Folder on" or "Other"
Yes, I have about 6 accounts and I have set them up to a Global Inbox. I don't want a separate Inbox per account. I set this up under Advanced account settings "Inbox for different account"
I have just tested with the old version 24.2 and it works fine. No duplicates in draft. Aside: A far better looking interface with clearer font, display etc
re :How should I configure the Accounts settings, Copies & Folders. Should this be "Drafts Folder on" or "Other"
for each pop account eg: Sent Select 'Other' and 'Sent on Local Folders'
eg: Drafts Select 'Other' and 'Drafts on Local Folders'
I have tested different versions and old versions work fine not producing multiple drafts, although do not support the latest Yahoo OATH connection. So now I am stuck. New version produces loads of drafts but old version does not wort with Yahoo. Where do I get the source code and I will fix it myself as I am a programmer?
Fixed but not sure how & why? Installed different versions and copies across different files. Definitely a BUG in the Thunderbird.
