My Firefox forgets that I want to use Windows standardapplication (Acrobat reader) when clickin on a .pdf-file. Firefox wants me to save the file after updates. Does anyone have a solution for this issue?

After you update the setting, does it work the way you want?

This preference is stored in your active Firefox profile folder in a file named handlers.json and I can't think of any reason for it to get changed or deleted during an update. Of course, if Firefox suggests a Refresh / Tune-up / new profile, then you would lose the file in that case.

When the setting stops working:

One issue is whether Firefox recognizes the download as a PDF. With the problem downloads, do you get the standard PDF dialog with three choices, or the standard dialog for other kinds of documents that doesn't have the top choice?

Another issue is whether the server tries to bypass viewing in a tab by sending the Content-Diposition: attachment header. That always triggers a download dialog, unfortunately. (The workaround involves using an extension.)

Thank you jsher200 for your suggestions. Yes, it works the way I want after having updated the setting, the standard dialog window then appears with the option “Open with Adobe Acrobat Reader DC” chosen as default, The box “Do this automatically…” is checked. This works continually until Firefox is updated next time.
