I use the site Word Hippo (an online thesaurus and Word tools website) regularly but cannot open this site on Firefox. However it opens on Chrome which seems very strange.

Hi Pooh Bear, what happens when you try to access the site? For example:

  • Error about loading the page -- could you copy/paste it into a reply?
  • Page appears blank -- could you try a reload bypassing the cache, either Shift+click the Reload button or press Ctrl+Shift+R
  • Something else
more options

Please explain the problem in detail. What happens? What is/are the exact error message(s) ?

Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot(Safe) Mode {web link}

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Troubleshoot(Safe) Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache.

Warning ! ! This will log you out of sites you're logged in to. You may also lose any settings for that website.

more options

There is a change in Firefox 96 related to cookies and insecure sites.

See also:

As a workaround for now you can modify this pref on the about:config page to revert this change.

  • about:config => network.cookie.sameSite.laxByDefault = false

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I accept the risk!" to continue.

You can remove all data stored in Firefox for a specific domain via "Forget About This Site" in the right-click context menu of an history entry ("History -> Show All History" or "View -> Sidebar -> History").

Using "Forget About This Site" will remove all data stored in Firefox for this domain like history and cookies and passwords and exceptions and cache, so be cautious. If you have a password or other data for that domain that you do not want to lose then make sure to backup this data or make a note.

You can't recover from this 'forget' unless you have a backup of involved files.

If you revisit a 'forgotten' website then data for that website will be saved once again.

more options

When I click on the site nothing happens, no error messages. When I right-click context menu of an history entry ("History -> Show All History" or "View -> Sidebar -> History"). there is no data there.

Pooh Bear,

I encountered the same issue and what I did is, I stopped anti-virus program and cleared cookies and restarted FireFox browser. Now, I'm able to open Word Hippo page without any issues.

more options

Thanks for your suggestions I stopped av programs, cleared cookies and restarted but this made no difference. I did notice when I restarted that real time protection had turned itself back on. I tried several times but each time real time protection seemed to turn on again with restarting.

Do you mean if you click a link to the site, the page just sits there like you never clicked it?

https://www.wordhippo.com/

more options

That's precisely what happens

more options

Any difference if you:

  • right-click > Open Link in New Tab
  • right-click > Open Link in New Private Window
more options

Thanks for suggestions Tried both with same result - won't open

more options

Did you get a blank tab and a blank private window when you right clicked on the https://www.wordhippo.com/ link, or did Firefox ignore the commands?

It's strange because I can't think of any reason for this particular site to be blocked. Who is against expanding your vocabulary?!

Did you ever test in Firefox's Safe/Troubleshoot Mode? In that mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, any userChrome.css/userContent.css files, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is running:

You can restart Firefox in Safe/Troubleshoot Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Help > Troubleshoot Mode... (before Fx88: Restart with Add-ons Disabled)
  • (menu bar) Help menu > Troubleshoot Mode... (before Fx88: Restart with Add-ons Disabled)

and OK the restart. A small dialog should appear. Click the Open button (before Fx88: "Start in Safe Mode" button).

If Firefox is not running:

Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. (On Mac, hold down the option/alt key instead of the Shift key.) A small dialog should appear. Click the Open button (before Fx88: "Start in Safe Mode" button).

Note: Don't use the Refresh without first reviewing this article to understand what will be deleted: Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings.

Any improvement?

I finished up refreshing which solved problem, but now I have no bookmarks,. I have my bookmarks saved in an HTML file in a back up folder but I can't seem to import them when following instructions from Mozilla website. Can you help please?

more options

The Refresh should have created an Old Firefox Data folder on your desktop containing your entire profile folder from earlier today. Can you find that?

If you drill down in that folder -- double-click into whatever weirdly named profile folder is in there -- you should find a folder named bookmarkbackups with the automatic bookmark backups. You should be able to spot the latest ones by the creation dates coded into the file names.

You can use the Restore feature to get those files into your new Firefox profile. You'll need to use "Choose File..." on the menu and point Firefox to Old Firefox Data, etc.

Here's the article on the Restore feature: Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer

Does that work?

I followed these steps Import bk mks from html>desktop>old FF data>book mks/double click shows no items match your search What am I doing wrong? I also have my own html book mks back up saved in a separate folder, but the same thing happens

more options

The files I mentioned are not HTML export files, they are compressed backup files. You need to start from

Restore > Choose File...

instead of Import.

Does that work any better?

more options

I had already tried that Restore>choose file by date. 'this will replace all previous bk mks'>ok>no items Ir shows 'no items'

Further information When I'm in the Import and Back Up window, in the LH pane there is a Bk Mks Menu, and when I click on that all my bk mks are there.

Okay, so, you need them to be visible in main toolbars.

Any progress so far?

more options

I might have misled you with last report. The book marks show in LH pane of the Import and Back Up window (indicating they are on my computer somewhere) but when I go to restore it continues to show 'no items' - and they are still not there when I open FF

more options

Sorry but this is still not working. I'm nearly 80 so I struggle a little what I'm doing with computers I found the Toolbars dropdown menu and chose bookmarks tool bar - always show - and clicked done. - but it's still not there when I open FF
