When I attempt to print a deposit slip or send an invoice from QuickBooks Online, the embedded pdf only shows if I set the pdf extension to always display in firefox. If I set it to always ask, I then pick show in firefox and it opens a new tab with the pdf. AND it downloads it to my download folder, neither of which I want to happen.

I have a similar issue. Firefox used to handle my PDFs on a more page-specific basis and would open them in the QBO plugin as you have shown, and on other sites it would ask how I want to handle the file (i.e. save, open in Adobe, etc). Now it's applying the setting globally which makes life more difficult because I need PDFs handled differently depending on the site.
