I use a program called Solver to generate reports and download them in the .xlsx format. After a recent update in Firefox, my downloaded files no longer contain an extension and instead only appear in my download folder as a generic "File".

I've checked and .xlsx files are definitely associated on my computer with Excel. Also when I open the file or later "Always Open Similar Files" they open using Excel no problem.

What's the reason these aren't getting an extension added to them? I've attached a picture where file 1 is what it looks like for a file downloaded using Firefox, file 2 is the same file that is opened at the time of download.

My issue kind of looks like this one and it seems the issue was a bug and the user needed to download a new release of Firefox: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1277280

Does this happen with all .xlsx files or only with files from a specific server ?

What does the Network Monitor show about these downloads ?

more options

When I download an .xlsx file from Solver, the File name in Network Monitor is called "should-use-legacy-libraries" and a json type. As mentioned before, this download is just called "File". Does that offer any clues? See attached image for the Network Monitor info on this download.

However when I download an .xlsx file from another place, like Google Drive, the file name in Network Monitor is "export?format=xlsx..." which would confirm that it's downloading in Excel format. The type is "vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.spreadsheetml.sheet".

How about other file types? Can you see other file types in explorer?

Hello, No other types that I've tried have any issue. For example PDFs download fine. All file types are visibly correct in File Explorer except for Excel when downloaded from Solver.

This is almost definitely a Firefox-specific issue although I cannot tell if there is a setting somewhere that I may have toggled that removed the link between downloading this type of file and saving it with a .xlsx file name.

I can say I tried Microsoft Edge for the exact same file and it saved as .xlsx.
