Hi.

I am running Thunderbird 128.3.1esr (32-bit) on Windows 10 (64 bit).

I have a number of Thunderbird email accounts, set up with three different email services. The following issue occurs on all of the accounts with one of those services, but not on the accounts with the others (Gmail, for example, is OK). The problem occurs only on IMAP accounts, not on POP accounts.

The issue: On arrival, the status for new emails is initially shown as Unread. However, within a few minutes the status changes to Read. This occurs without opening the email, and even without highlighting it in the Inbox. It will still occur even if none of the problem accounts are open or highlighted.

The problem only occurs if Thunderbird is open. If Thunderbird is closed, emails remain Unread on my phone until I open them.

I have tried turning off my phone, but this has no effect: the email status continues to change to Read if Thunderbird is open.

I have checked Thunderbird Settings. Historically, under the Reading & Display section, emails were set to be marked as Read immediately on display. I have now turned off the “Automatically mark messages as read” section completely. This has had no impact.

The problem began a few days ago. Until then, there had been no issues. I didn’t change any settings prior to the problem’s occurrence.

Can anyone help please?

Thank you.

IMAP is syncronised. Folk appear to have trouble which that for some reason, despite expecting it messages to be syncronised they do not expect everything to synchronism, like deleted messages synchronizing out of Thunderbird or messages marked as read on the server to reflect that change in Thunderbird.

Some mail providers mark mail online as read when it is accessed, especially via pop which is still a popular protocol with some phone apps as less data is used. My guess if your phone is accessing the mail to display it there, and the provider is marking it as read. It can become quite messy where shared accounts are concerned and multiple devices.
