I got a message about not being able to use Firefox on Jan. 14, 2025? What? I am using an older version that is the one for Mac OSX 10.11.6. Because I refuse to pay Adobe to rent the graphics software I already own, I will not update my Mac. Can I still keep using Firefox or is it going to be completely gone?

Hi Jeri

You can continue to use Firefox if you wish, but it will no longer get security and stability updates, risking an insecure browser in the future and, in the longer term, webpages and other services not working correctly.

Hi Jeri, I'm not aware of any key date in January, but changes are coming around March 14, 2025.

The Extended Support Release of Firefox 78, which received its final update in October 2021, isn't going to completely stop running, but some important features probably will stop working, including add-ons -- because Firefox 78 will no longer be able to verify their digital signatures -- and updates to various sensitive lists, such as revoked website certificates. You can find more information in the following article: Update Firefox to prevent add-ons issues from root certificate expiration.

If you can't update MacOS without paying a significant tax to Adobe, I guess you're stuck, unless there is some kind of magical emulator to keep that software running on new versions of MacOS.

By the way, you may recall from an earlier message that Sync would stop working in Firefox 78 in April 2024. To protect against losing your Firefox data (such as bookmarks and saved logins), you can keep Time Machine or other backups of your profile folder. See: Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles.

I suspect that around March 15th there will be a lot of threads looking for workarounds, so we'll see what people come up with once this hits.

Firefox 79.0 to 115 ESR requires macOS 10.12, 10.13, 10.14 to run while Firefox 116.0 or later requires macOS 10.15 or later to run. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-users-macos-1012-1013-1014-moving-to-extended-support

So I take it you cannot even update to macOS 10.12 because of this Adobe software?

I wonder if that email notice of January 14 was a typo and meant to be March 14.
