The background to Firefox has been taken over by an advert for Harry Potter - how can I remove this please?

Sounds that you installed a Persona.
You can uninstall that Persona and revert to the Default theme (Tools > Add-ons > Themes). See Use themes to change the look of Firefox and http://kb.mozillazine.org/Themes (Lightweight theme)
