I am able to log into the site, then when the chat window/applet is loading at some point it turns black.

I have updated Java, found a Java Virtual Machine download, removed older versions of Java console but no change.

You can try to enable "Direct Connection" in the Java Control Center:
Control Panel > Java > General tab > "Network Settings...": "Direct Connection" (enable)

I went to Control Panel -> Java -> Advanced -> expand Security, go to -> General and checked the box that said "Use SSL 2.0 compatible ClientHello format" and everything started to work as normal. You should give it a try but I'm not a computer expert.
