How do I go about regaining history, bookmarks, and settings (all of which were destroyed by the latest update of Firefox to 3.6.12)?

Yesterday, I updated to version 3.6.12 . I had a large number of bookmarks, personalized settings, and I never delete history. When I started up the new Firefox, all such items had disappeared as though they'd never existed - except for plug-ins, it looked like a completely fresh install, instead of an update. All settings had reverted to the defaults, so I reset them to my preferences, hoping this would possibly bring back my history and bookmarks. No dice.

Question: Is there any way to regain my information and settings?

Firefox stores user data in a profile, it is possible that you have more than one profile and Firefox is no longer using your original profile. Plugins are not stored in the profile and will be available for all profiles.

Try running the profile manager to see if there is more than one profile listed, if there is switch to the other profile. For details of how to access the profile manager see the managing profiles article.

You may need to check the files on disk as well in case profiles.ini was lost and a new default profile got created. In such a case you won't see older profiles in the profile manager.
