Ask jeeves appeared out of the blue as my home page about a week ago. i keep following the instructions on the firefox home page to set my home page by dragging the logo to the home icon and answering yes. Great! i've done it. then the next time i boot up and click on firefox i've got ask again! how do i get rid of ask and stay on google?

Please do the following.

  • In the location bar, type about:config and hit Enter.
  • In the filter at the top, type: keyword.URL
  • Double click it and remove whatever's in there and replace it with http://www.google.com/search?q=
  • Go to File | Exit
  • Restart Firefox, go to the site you want to set as your homepage.
  • Go to Tools | Options | General.
  • Make sure it says "Show My Homepage" in the first dropdown menu.
  • Click the button called "Use Current Pages" to set the homepage to the one you have on the screen.

The URL to add in "keyword.URL" becomes a link in this post, so right click it and choose "Copy Link Location" to copy it to the Windows clipboard. Then hit CTRL+V to paste it. Saves you having to type the whole thing.

Hi! I get as far as entering the 'keyword.URL' bit but double clicking on that doesn't do anything. A window comes up asking me to enter 'string value'. I also managed to produce a screed of stuff which I don't think I want to touch! What am I not doing that I should be?
