Tab groups being restored automatically on restart

I'm having an issue with FF5 under Linux after starting to use tab groups. It automatically restores all open tabs after exiting and restarting FF. I'm also not warned about closing tabs when exiting, even though that is set under preferences and about:config.

In short I'd like to have it warn me when exiting with multiple open tabs, and for my previous tabs to not be re-opened on a restart unless I select restore session.

Did you check the startup setting?

Edit > Preferences > General > Startup: "When Firefox Starts": "Show my home page" "Show a blank page"

Ubuntu may be overriding those prefs.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Firefox 4 and later versions save the previous session automatically, so there is no longer need for the dialog asking if you want to save the current session.
Use "File > Exit" or "Firefox > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit Firefox") if you want to restore multiple windows.
You can use "History > Restore Previous Session" to get the previous session at any time.
You may need to click the orange/gray Firefox button to see History.
There is also a "Restore Previous Session" button on the default about:home Home page.

I'm still seeing the behaviour in safe mode. My only issue is that I don't want to have the previous session automatically restored. I'd like to be able to choose.

Oh! No I didn't, but I must have checked "show my home page AND tabs from last time" at some point. An obvious solution!
