Can't sync firefox because I need to accept third party cookies. Option to accept in Control Panel & in Firefox changed; Firefox resets itself after I change options to accept.

When I tried to sync Firefox with my IPhone Firefox told me I need to accept third party cookies. I changed Internet Options to accept; I changed Firefox to custom settings. Internet Options kept my changes to override settings and allow third party cookies. Firefox keeps reverting back to not accepting them. I checked with my anti-virus program (AVG) and they say their program does not do anything to cookies.

See:

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Ok, I started in Safe Mode. Then what? I can't find Firefox (Tools). I changed my options in safe mode; then what? I don't think you went far enough as I don't know what I'm supposed to do. I changed options in Safe Mode and exited safe mode and my options returned to default. I still need help. This is a brand new laptop with Firefox downloaded as the default browser. I feel there must be something in firefox's program that is preventing me from changing my preferences to allow third party cookies, especially if AVG doesn't interfere with cookies at all as they told me.

Ok, I have followed the directions at both websites you listed. Nothing worked. I do however, get an error message when I try to open the prefs.js file: C:\users\candy\appdata\roaming\mozilla\firefox\profiles\trrwtjhd.default\prefs.js Line: 1 Char: 1 Invalid character code - 800A03F6 Does this help at all? I've deleted the prefs file and it reinstalled itself giving me the same error message when I tried to open it.

I'm starting to think the problem is strictly in Firefox because, as I said, this is a new computer with the latest version of Firefox newly installed. I have not ever had this problem with older versions of Firefox, which I've been using for years.

I've done everything the support website and mozilla ezine say to do. I'm very frustrated as there are online web album files I can't access without accepting third party cookies and then again, I still have the problem of not being able to sync my phone with Firefox. Please help me. Should I try deleting Firefox and installing an older version? I can't see how the prefs file could be corrupted if not from within.

Thanks for any help or suggestions you may be able to give. Candy

You do not need to open the file prefs.js with a double-click or via the right-click context menu as that will make Windows try to open the file as a JScript file and that will fail because the file is a Firefox text file and Windows can't open it that way. You can inspect the file in a text editor like Notepad instead if you want to. I don't think that Sync would require third-party cookies to be enabled as I've never sen this mentioned before.

If "Remember History" is selected then that means that all history and cookie settings have the default value and that includes enabling third-party cookies. "Use custom settings for history" reverts to "(Never) Remember history" if all History and Cookies settings have the default setting. "Use custom settings for history" stays selected if at least one of the History or Cookie settings is not the default to make you aware that changes from the defaults are made.

Thanks so much for your continued efforts to help me! I'm going to try to sync the phone again and see what happens. I tried to open my web albums and now it let me in and thank goodness all my web albums are there. Maybe this is for nothing and the phone will now sync. I greatly appreciate your help. Perhaps now my problem will be solved. I wasn't successful in opening the file in notepad. It opened but there were only a few lines of text, I don't remember what right now. but, I'm not going to obsess, not if I can sync. Thanks again and I'll hit "solved it" if it works. Candy
