I have a few plug-ins that obviously are not compatible with FF 8. I even tried updating the Picasa 3 plug-in, and it still says it's not updated?

I have 5 plug-ins I'm having problems with.

Shockwave Flash Shockwave Flash 11.0 r1 ( Apparently they don't even have a Windows Vista update for 64 bit systems? Only Windows 7)

Windows Presentation Foundation Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) plug-in for Mozilla browsers

Picasa Picasa plugin

Google Earth Plugin GEPlugin

This is why I usually wait a few months after a version is released. It's become a numbers race with Google Chrome, FF, etc. to seem like they are ahead of the other guys while releasing versions with a bunch of bugs still in them. All you have to do is look at the forum here to see that.

So nobody in the entire community of FF users has an answer for this? Great!

Those are all third-party Add-ons to Firefox and those are handled differently in Firefox 8.

Adobe Flash
There are 2 versions of Adobe Flash:

  • an ActiveX version for IE only
  • a Plugin version for most other browsers including Firefox
  • On a Windows system, you should always update both individually.
  • You do not appear to have the Plugin version for Firefox installed. If you did, in Add-ons > Plugins you would see "Shockwave Flash (version)". If "Shockwave Flash" is there and is disabled, click the "Enable" button.
  • Check your Plugins often --> http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
  • only the most popular/used Plugins are known by this page
  • page will detect only installed, enabled Plugins

Install or update Adobe Flash

  1. Using Firefox, go to the following link and SAVE the download to your desktop so you can find it later. Un-check any items on that page that you do not want to download (i.e., "McAfee Security Scan Plus":
  2. When the download is finished, close Firefox (File > Exit OR Firefox button > Exit)
  3. Click or double-click on the file you just saved to your desktop
    • In the installation window that appears, click the box to the left of "I have read and...." to place a check mark in the box
    • The "Install" button in the lower right corner will now be highlighted, click it.
    • The installation is quick.
  4. Start Firefox and test your installation here: https://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
  5. To update/install the ActiveX version for IE only, repeat the process, but use IE to go to the above website.

NOTE: Some users have experienced some problems with the 32-bit version of Flash (Firefox is a 32-bit browser and requires it) not being installed on 64-bit systems; the current Adobe Flash installer is supposed to install both on 64-bit systems with a 32-bit browser. If Firefox does not recognize Flash (see the test page above) after installing per the above instructions, then download, and SAVE to your Desktop, the 32-bit installer from the direct link below. After the download is complete, run the installer and test on the test page above again.
