I work on this laptop and have many open tabs at a time. Since FF updated a few days ago, nothing is ever saved. I have lost all the links to my work with no record in history. Spent too much time online researching. Thought it had to do with Norton clean up. Then realized FF had updated and that is when the problem started. I doubt there is any way to retrieve the history or tabs, but how can I make it start savings history and tabs again AND prevent these loses from happening again? I love FF, but if this continues, I am done. It was saving me time. Now, I have lost everything! TIA

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode.

To see all History and Cookie settings, choose:

  • Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting Firefox will: Use custom settings for history
  • Deselect: [ ] "Always use private browsing mode"

When using "Clear history when Firefox closes":

  • Do not clear the "Browsing History".

Thankyou fo ryour =response. I checked everything and the settings were already as you had suggested. So that did not solve teh problem. Whatever happened, it happened as a direct result of the most recent Firefox update, installed witnin the last few days. So it is no longer saving history or tabs once I shut down. Thisis crucial for me to continue using Firefox. Any other ideas?

THank you

Does it work any better with this setting:

  • Tools > Options > General > Startup: When Firefox Starts: Show my windows and tabs from last time

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

Delete the sessionstore.js file and possible sessionstore-##.js files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

This was already set that wasy: Tools > Options > General > Startup: When Firefox Starts: Show my windows and tabs from last time

The rest of your response is over my head. I have no idea how to proceed with that. I went to the page you linked, and it begins with Firefox 3. I have 15.1. And itis confusing too boot.

Anything simpier? I appreciate your help but this is taking so much time, and I already lost over a day researching it and downtime from losing my history and tbs. :-(

Did you try to go to the Firefox Profile Folder?

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder

In that folder you can locate the sessionstore.js file and rename (e.g. sessionstore.js.sav) or move the file to another folder in case there is a problem with the file. You can also check for the presence of sessionstore-##.js files with a number and remove those as well.

Otherwise try to create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Creating a profile":

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

See:

You can also try to reset Firefox:
