We switched from using a GPO to dole out Firefox installs to installing the standard version on our user's machines, because of the silent update feature, but my inbox has been flooded with "Firefox is asking me to update to 16, and says I need admin approval"

All of the installations were installed using default settings that included automatic updates using the background service. Is there any other way I can change this so users will receive the silent updates?

If the users don't have Admin permissions on their machines they can't install Firefox updates. You can either give users Admin permissions locally, or keep using a GPO.
