When I right click on the desktop icon, and go to find target and click on the Mozilla icon again, I get "Your Firefox profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible. The only thing I remember when I loaded Java was that it asked if I wanted the Ask.com toolbar. I think I said no because I have too many tool bars already. I did a search for "profiles.ini.file" and "profile_folder_-_firefox" and Windows XP returned that no file found by either name.

Try to delete the profiles.ini file to force Firefox to create a new default profile.

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

Like I said, I did a search for the two file names stated in my first post. They don't seem to exist. I also ran %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox and it came up with no file found. So no joy yet
