Because Firefox is often very slow or hangs, I followed the instructions on support page "Firefox hangs or is not responding - How to fix". The instructions include : In the Firefox profile folder, find and rename the files places.sqlite to places.sqlite.old and places.sqlite-journal to places.sqlite-journal.old (if it exists).

I followed the instructions and found the places.sqlite file, but not the places.sqlite-journal file. However, when I did a search of my HD, I discovered a folder called "mozembed" lurking inside the folder for the game "FallenEarth"; inside mozembed was another places.sqlite file as well as a places.sqlite-journal file. Any attempt to move the files out of their folder doesn't work; all you get is an alias.

What is happening here, and what should I do? Dump the entire mozembed file?

Hello,

Mozembed is a widget that allows you to embed the Mozilla Gecko engine in Gtk+ applications.

See here: https://github.com/php/php-gtk-src/tree/master/ext/mozembed

I suspect that the game FallenEarth is using this widget. I don't think it is related to your Firefox install.

It sounds like you don't have a places.sqlite-journal file. Did this help solve your slowness / hanging problem?

There are also tips here:

If none of these work it may be worth resetting Firefox. Firefox will return to its default settings but will keep your bookmarks, personal data etc. See here for more detail:

Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings
