When I click on a photo on my webpage (or any other) this stupid newtab list of icons for twitter or facebook comes up. It is completely intrusive and I DO NOT WANT IT When I tried to enter "about.config" in the location bar, it just comes up with a window saying "page not found" so I cannot go any further.

WHY DON'T you ASK ME before messing with my system? your updates should be automatic for security ONLY. I feel like you have raped my computer when you add stuff like "mysearchdial" and quiknowledge" and now this garbage. STOP automatically changing my system without asking me.

and PLEASE tell me how to get rid of this newtab thing so I can navigate websites without constantly being confronted with it.

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

It is about:config with a colon (about: is a protocol just like http:) and not "about.config" with a dot.

You can check the browser.newtab.url pref on the about:config page.

You can use the SearchReset extension to reset some preferences to the default values.

Note that the SearchReset extension only runs once and then uninstalls automatically, so it won't show on the "Firefox > Add-ons" page (about:addons).

What is the current value of the browser.newtab.url pref if you check this on the about:config page?

You can open the about:config page via the location bar and you can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue

the person who recommended I reset firefox to default was the only solution that helped. thank you. I tried to click on the"mark it as solved" box, but it said "access denied"

after going to "about:config" via the location bar, when I tried setting the "browser.newtab.url" from "about:newtab" to "about:blank" then all the things I tried to open were just a blank white window, just as the name implies.

Resetting firefox from Help/troubleshooting menu/reset default was the only thing that helped. The person who recommended this was supersluether. I had tried his/her first recommendation to set the newtab url back to "about:newtab" but that did not help.
