ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS; tbird 31.1.2 - BUT, problem followed me from an older computer, older version of ubuntu & older tbird

I have email accounts on verizon and google

I attempt to reply OR compose a message using cut and paste (typically a page long) to send :
To google server via chrome or firefox- works fine
To verizon mail server via chrome or firefox - works fine
To verizon mail via thunderbird - sends "79%" (e.g.) and hangs until it times out with
            "Sending of message failed.
Please verify that your Mail & Newsgroups account settings are correct and try again."

But, sending shorter "hand composed" messages via thunderbird work just fine.

Suggestions?

I was misled by Thunderbird's hanging with (e.g.) "79% sent" displayed (once it said "100% sent") and either a timeout or a hang-forever. I assumed it was either a message length, a content or bug issue.

It turns out, it was my incorrect STMP parameter settings, which should be set as shown at the end of the page: http://forums.verizon.com/t5/Verizon-net-Email/New-outgoing-465-port-not-working-in-my-Windows-7-Thunderbird-OR/td-p/648303

I believe the "xx% sent" was BS. Nothing was received by Verizon, but Tbird did not recognize the logon/handshake failure until the pipe got clogged.

BTW, my Verizon cable modem is of recent vintage and capably handles 3 directly connected desktops and by lan: a laptop, a tablet and 2 cellphones - not necessarily simultaneously.

My thanks to Matt for his effort.

For experimental purposes paste as plain text Ctrl+Shift+C.... that will eliminate document formatting from any send equation. Usually not important unless there is an anti virus programs scanning outgoing mail.

What most people simply do not realize is that anti virus programs scan outgoing mail from Mail clients like Thunderbird, but they do not see browser activity as mail in any way to scan it as such. So outgoing mail scanning is not invoked by sending web mail.

However I digress, I am making assumptions here, first and foremost is your router/modem is OLD see http://thunderbirdtweaks.blogspot.com.au/2010/10/i-cant-sent-mail-networktcpsendbuffer.html and let me know itf it did the job.
