For several weeks, each time I start FireFox I get a box asking if I want it to be my default browser. Every time I click "Yes". When I do, another box comes up and says "your computer must be restarted to complete a previous upgrade of FireFox. Do you want to reboot now?" I click no because I have clicked yes several times and that reboot does not stop this cycle from repeating every time. I have version 33.0.2 installed and am using Windows 7. I have tried "resetting" FireFox and re-installing it. Neither cures the problem.

More recently I have a recurrence of a problem that happened a year or two ago. When using the video downloader my downloads stall and timeout if I don't keep the mouse in constant motion! This was a FireFox related issue when it happened before and I think was cured by a FireFox update. Has the problem crept back in, or is there likely another villain this time? Using Norton for security.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer. Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.
