My default "new tab" page (with the tiles) disappeared and became about:home|about:newtab, which brings up a "the address isn't valid" error. How do I make the new tab page just about:newtab?

Your System Details list show:

  • browser.newtab.url: about:home|about:newtab

So you need tho modify this pref on the about:config page and set its value to about:newtab.

  • about:config page: browser.newtab.url = about:newtab

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

Note that using the pipe (|) to set multiple pages only works for the home page.
