How do I stop Thunderbird from going directly to the next message after deleting the one I'm reading?

How do I stop Thunderbird from going directly to the next message after deleting the one I'm reading? I want it to go back to the listing of all incoming mail so I can choose which email I open next. I may see something I don't want to open at all, but the way it's configured right now, it opens the next email automatically.

Thank you. I don't want to download an add-on, so I tried the message pane, and I guess that will do. I used Thunderbird a couple years ago and it used to have an option of where it would go after deleting a message while viewing it in it's own window. But I think I can live with this option. so Thanks again.

I read messages in the Message Pane, so I don't have your problem.

But you could try this add-on:
