Is there a "work offline" option and how does it work?
I am looking for a way to us my desktop applications unconnected to the internet - short of unplugging my computer. Does such an option exist?

no worries, it isn't the most obvious place to look... yes, you will be totally disconnected as long as this is checked - however the option naturally only applies to firefox, but not for other applications on your system.

hi toscan, in firefox you can go to the menu > developer tools and select work offline at the bottom of that list...
I must be blind - thanks! Forgive my paranoia but would you answer this: I can see that I can't access the internet when I do that, but am I truly unconnected?

Like Safari? And, i assume, any (Mac) software that continually updates, like MacMail and iTunes?
Isn't "Work Offline" present in the File menu on Mac?
Yes, it is - I replied awhile back - see below.
