Firefox icon on taskbar only accesses internet if "Open new tab" or "Open new window" is selected. How do I configure taskbar icon to work properly?

The Firefox shortcut on my desktop works correctly, but recently, the icon on my taskbar will open Firefox, but won't access the internet. The only way I can get this to work is to right-click on the taskbar icon and select on of the Tasks: Open new tab, Open new window or New private window. I've tried to reinstall Firefox a few times but still have the issue. I'm running Firefox 44 on Windows 7. Any ideas?

Hmm, what is the difference between your desktop shortcut and your pinned taskbar icon?

If you use the taskbar icon and get a blank page, if you click the Home button (or use the Alt+Home keyboard shortcut), will Firefox work normally from that point forward?
