Suddenly, when accessing Yahoo Sports about Tony Romo, the volume on the ATT PrePaid commercial is fine, but there is no sound on the Yahoo Sports video itself

My older laptop and my tower in my office both run Linux. Until lately, I've been able to watch/listen to sports videos on Yahoo, but this last week, it's strange, because on Yahoo Sports (https://sports.yahoo.com/nfl-lineman-iron-man-012656658.html) for example, the ad for Direct TV plays just fine, but when it switches to the NFL video, there is no sound. Same on other Yahoo stories and other websites. If I go to Youtube to play music videos, there is no problem. Weird... This is currently only a problem on my laptop, not my tower upstairs. The only difference is that this laptop is Firefox 55, and the tower is Firefox 54. Any ideas? They are both, obviously, older machines, but I just need to know what, if anything, happened between 54 and 55 that videos no longer play.

Thanks

Firefox has transitioned from Gstreamer to FFMPEG, so you will need to download the proper FFMPEG package with H.264 support for your Linux distribution.

You can check which are enabled at www.youtube.com/html5

Try the Firefox version from the official Mozilla server if you currently use a version from the repositories of your Linux distribution.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window
