I set up an account for use in SENDING email, and before I finished the account creation, I ensured that Thunderbird was set up to NOT do anything with this account in regards to checking email.

None of the following is checked.

[_] Check for new messages at startup

[_] Check for new messages every XX minutes

[_] Allow immediate server notifications when new messages arrive

And the program still is downloading messages. (If the pop reader on the other machine doesn't get them off the server first that is.)

How long has this problem been happening?

Since I created the account.

If I don't POP the email on the OTHER computer first, Thunderbird on THIS computer will IMAP download the messages.

I suspect that IMAP is working in "push" mode; the server offers email to the client as and when it becomes available.

Can you not set it up to use POP on this second computer?

It is set up as POP on the second computer. I set it up on this computer because I have a need to send company related emails from this computer a few times a month. I have ZERO need to read any email from that account, anything that goes to that account is such a low priority that it can wait till I get to work to deal with it.

How do I disable this "push" mode?

This bug is still there, where is the official bug tracker for thunderbird?

There is no on/off switch for accounts in Thunderbird. Some users have reported success by simply not entering the incoming account's password.

The bug reporting system can be found at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org
