I can see my gmail calendar in thunderbird OK but changes made to the local thunderbird calendar are not reflected in the gmail calendar and vice versa.

How are you synchronizing the calendar, with CalDAV or the Provider add-on?

I have tried both but don't seem to be able to get gmail to update with the changes I make in thunderbird.

Changes are calendar specific. You will have a local and a remote (Google) calendar. Only actions you take on the Google synchronized calendar will replicate. The Local calendar will remain local.

Usually the entries for each calendar are keyed by colour so you know which calendar you are changing.
