Thumbnails look very blurred and as if they were viewed at about 20dpi resolution. Larger images are not much better, also blurry and not clear.

Are you using a web accelerator is is your ISP using one to speed up page loading?

People PC uses a web accelerator, and has for a long time.

This problem with the low resolution of images did not occur until Firefox updated today. I am a photographer and this situation is intolerable, I must be able to see all images in the full resolution they are available in without needing to do anything. Some of the websites I use have as many as 20 images per page.

In Firefox 3.6.4 the default connection settings have been changed to "Use the system proxy settings". See "Firefox connection settings" in Server Not Found - Troubleshoot connection problems

You can find the connection setting here: Tools > Options > Advanced : Network : Connection If you do not need to use a proxy to connect to internet then select No Proxy
