I would like to recover my bookmarks from an old places.sqlite file, one from another machine. But I don't want to just copy the file over my current places.sqlite file, b/c I don't want to lose my current bookmarks. I just want to be able to see what was in the old one. Doable?

Easiest is to create a new profile and copy the file places.sqlite to that profile. If you keep both profiles open at the same time then you can even use Copy and Paste to transfer bookmarks from one profile to another. I do that to sync JavaScript bookmarklets and specific bookmarks folders between different Firefox versions.
