Every time I log into Firefox I get a s/w update screen saying it is strongly recommended to apply this update. I have applied all updates that I am aware of but this keeps appearing. The 'view more information' link does not work. If I click 'next' it just says contacting update server but nothing ever happens???????

Firefox 4.0.1 was released a couple of weeks ago, and something seems to be messed up with the downloading of that update for some users. There have been a large number of postings here about that update process "grinding on forever" and not completing, or with some users, not even being able to contact the update server.

Open Help > About Firefox and see if the update downloads for you there. Otherwise, download 4.0.1 fron here and install it over 4.0.

Did you ever install a Firefox 4 beta version or a Firefox 4 release candidate (RC)?

If you did then it is possible that you are still on the beta update channel.
You can check that by looking at the pref app.update.channel on the about:config page.
If the value of that pref is beta then it is better to download and install the full Firefox 4 release.
