You can block ads by using the Adblock Plus add-on - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/adblock-plus/

When I try to install this, it says it will install after firefox is restarted, which I do, then nothing happens! Do you have to make the contribution first?

A part of the installation process it should ask to install a filter subscription. Did you install a filter subscription? If not, press Control+Shift+F, this opens the AdBlock Plus preferences, then in the Filters menu select "Add Filter Subscription" and choose one of the filter subscriptions, I use EasyList.
